Running At Night? Stay Safe and Bright!

It's that time of year were the days are shorter and the nights are longer. If you are someone who doesn't normally run in the dark and now due to the limited amount of daylight during the winter months is forcing you to venture into the dark to get your run in, staying visible for safety should be a top priority. There are some pretty cool running accessories and lights that will not only help you illuminate the path ahead of you, but allow others to see you from every angle. This should be especially important if you are going to be taking to the roads for your runs.

Below are several of running accessories that will keep you seen and safe for all your night time runs.

1. Tracer360 - Multicolor Illuminated, Reflective Vest for Running

I remember when this vest was first being advertised. I thought it was pretty sweet! Not only does it provide 360 degree visibility up to a 1/4 mile, but with the eye catching multicolor LED light bands, runners can blaze the trails and streets as if they were on the set of TRON....

What I like about this vest:

  • It is lightweight and provides a secure fit.

  • It completely weatherproof which is great if you get stuck in the rain.

  • Last up to 40 hours on a single battery set.

What I don't like about this vest:

  • It requires batterie whereas products similar can charge via USB.

  • It is a little pricier than similar products. - Around $60

2. Emmabin LED Slap Armband Lights Glow Band for Running.

These simple armbands are great way to ensure you can be seen while running in the dark. I have a set of these myself and they are great. You can use them for many other night time activities as well.

What I like:

  • Inexpensive - a set of 4 for $13.

  • Easy to put on

  • Long battery life - 72 -96 hours straight with it turned on the entire time.

What I don't like:

  • It requires batterie whereas products similar can charge via USB.

  • Need to wear multiple bands for maximum visibility.

3. GearLight S1 LED Safety Lights

Like the arm band mentioned above, these little clip on lights are also a super simple and inexpensive way to light yourself up while you run.

What I like:

  • Inexpensive at around $15.

  • Easy to put on

  • Long battery life - up to 100 hours continuous use

What I don't like:

  • Again they aren't rechargeable and require new battery replacement.

  • The clips aren't very sturdy and break fairly easy.

  • They tend to bounce around a lot.

4. Knuckle Lights Colors - Super Bright Lights for Running and Walking

Being able to also see where you are stepping is just as important as being seen by others. These handheld lights can be a great options to take with you on your night runs.

  • That are remarkably compact and lightweight

  • Very bright at 120 lumens they will light up 25 feet in front of you.

  • They are completely waterproof

  • Able to point quickly in any direction.

What I don't like:

5. ALOVECO Outdoor Night Running Lights LED Chest Light Back Warning Light

Here is an effective device that not only lights your path forward, but has a back warning light. I have one of these devices and love it. For the price point as well it provides a great value.

What I like:

  • Inexpensive at only around $20.

  • Front chest light provides a very bright light casting up to 250 lumens.

  • Adjustable front light.

  • USB Rechargeable

  • Lightweight and fits snuggly

  • Not very durable. However for the price point its okay.

6. RABOW USB Rechargeable Illuminated & Reflective Vest

Similar to the Tracer 360 vest mentioned in the number one spot above, this vest has a little bit more going on with it. Again, it provides 360 degree visibility with LED multicolor light bands. However it also has a spot light in the front that proves to be useful in lighting up you path ahead of you.

What I like about this vest:

  • It is lightweight and provides a secure fit.

  • It completely weatherproof which is great when you get stuck in the rain.

  • Lasts between 8-24 hours on a single charge.

  • Rechargeable via USB.

What I don't like about this vest:

  • The most expensive out of all the previous mentioned devices - Around $ 70

I hope this article provided some insight. Like I mentioned there are many other useful devices out there to use as well. These are just a few I thought were great options.

The biggest take away is that your safety should be a top priority in anything you do and running in the dark is no exception.
